This small research project – funded by King’s College London Global Engagement Funds – aims to map the range of PhD programmes developed and offered by ARUA universities across Africa in creative economies-related subject fields (listed below).
Within the project, we define PhDs in Creative economies as including (but not limited) to:
- PhDs. in creative arts (dance, music, visual art, drama, sculpture and other creative fields)
- PhDs in cultural policy, cultural management, creative industries management, cultural economics and other sub-sectors (for example cultural heritage management or film policy)
- PhDs in media (including journalism, film, and other media)
- PhDs in design including graphic design, craft design and fashion
- PhDs in media and cultural studies
- PhDs in creative technologies, including game design, sounds and video.
The project aims to collect data to map the sector and look at opportunities for development and collaboration. It also consider:
- What infrastructure and support are currently available across ARUA universities to promote and support the development of high-level knowledge and excellence in creative economies-related fields?
- What new opportunities (funding, partnerships, collaborations) could support the sector further?
- What challenges and barriers need to be addressed for the recognition and work of the sector?
The project has received ethics approval from King’s College London (MRA-23/24-42042). The information sheet for the project survey can be downloaded here:
